Although it’s safe to say 2021 hasn’t been the year we hoped, there’ve been incredible moments and milestones met in the Therapy Care community. Join us over the next few days as we celebrate these achievements and the people behind them.
Meet Mitchell, he is one of Therapy Care’s many outstanding participants of 2021. Mitchell is vivacious and often described as cheeky. He loves to make people laugh.
At the beginning of the year, Mitchell – who lives with Down Syndrome, set NDIS goals that focused on improving independence. Mitchell’s motivation to do so was to assist with moving back into the family home.
Mitchell’s goals were circulated among his support team at Therapy Care. His speech therapist and support workers in the Life-Skills Group Program were effective at implementing pathways and teaching moments for Mitchell to work on the skills he needed to develop in order to achieve his goals.
Mitchell and support worker Jayden, worked together to create a daily personal hygiene routine and complete household tasks. Outside of the home, Mitchell was encouraged and supported to build new friendships and engage in community initiatives.
Mitchell’s commitment to putting in the work consistently and the support and encouragement to do so, saw his skills increase throughout the year. Some of the tasks Mitchell can now do with support include making his bed, putting a load of washing on, hanging it out to dry, and taking it off the clothesline.
Mitchell has gained so much independence this year, and is extremely proud to be working towards achieving his NDIS goals.
Looking ahead to 2022, Mitchell will continue his daily activity skills and gain access to short term accommodation through his new found independence.
Mitchell is also working with his Therapy Care support team to develop skills that may lead to employment. These include travel training and budgeting. With his support team, Mitchell will determine his eligibility to the Disability Employment Scheme, as well as develop a shortlist of the types of jobs and workplaces that are best suited to his skills and abilities.
