Therapy Care is launching respite STA getaways!
This year Therapy Care is extending its services to include overnight and weekend getaway trips for participants. These trips present participants with the opportunity to practice their independent living skills away from their family, as well as achieve their goals to expand their social skills, partake in new recreational activities and visit new places.
We have so many exciting trips planned this year that suit a variety of needs! There is a great mix of close-to-home getaways , as well as awe-inspiring locations for those seeking adventure. To name a few, we will be travelling to the Whitsundays, Hamilton Island, and Newcastle.
In addition to the unique social environment the trips provide, developing functional capacity via recreational pursuits is a key focus. All trips will have a considered itinerary that will include a well-balanced roster of stimulating, relaxing and mindful activities. Some of the stimulating activities include fishing, swimming and go-karting. The more mindful activities include arts and craft and purposeful time dedicated to meaningful conversation.
We spoke with respite coordinator*not sure if we want title changed*, Ryan Zorzit, about the benefits of STA Getaway trips on participants’ social and functional capacity.
“Increasing social skills, community participation and developing functional capacity are common goals for many of our participants,” Ryan explains.
Our STA Getaway trips are designed to be inclusive and engaging for a wide range of physical and mental disabilities. When a trip is organized, specific leisure interests are planned to correlate with the participant’s goals and motivators to increase compliance and participation throughout the trip.
“Before launching, we trailed the STA Getaways last year with participants living with mild intellectual disabilities, schizophrenia, complex mental health, autism and down syndrome. With positive feedback from all participants it goes to show many can benefit from STA Getaway trips when activities align with their interests and goals,” said Ryan.
STA Getaways provide benefits not only to participants but to their primary careers as well. We recognized how crucial it is to support the wellbeing of careers, and aim to support them wherever possible.
“We hope participants return to the home more confident to carry out daily living tasks, as while they are away, they are supported to be really proactive in this space.
“Some of the tasks we support participants to carry out during the trips include washing, meal preparation, participating in grooming and bathing activities, maintaining a tidy room and purchasing their meals,” explains Ryan.
