This week, 24–30 August, we celebrate Speech Pathology Week 2025. The theme, “Impact through communication”, reflects the heart of what our speech pathologists do every day at Therapy Care—empowering people of all ages to connect, grow, and thrive through communication.
One story that captures this impact is Phillip’s. Phillip is 12 years old and has been working with Therapy Care Speech Pathologist Bronte for over a year and a half. With his mum’s support and dedication, Phillip has made incredible progress on his communication journey.
When Phillip first started working with Bronte, he often became frustrated because others could not understand him. He struggled to express his needs clearly, which affected his confidence both at home and at school.
Through play-based activities, visual supports, social stories, and AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) strategies such as LAMP, Phillip gradually built his expressive language skills. Bronte also incorporated Dynamic Temporal Tactile Cueing (DTTC), a movement-based approach that helps improve intelligibility of functional words. These evidence-informed strategies have supported Phillip to advocate for himself more effectively.
The progress has been inspiring. Phillip can now say his name clearly; a milestone that has given him a new sense of pride and independence. He has become more confident in joining conversations and can express his needs at both school and home. For Phillip and his family, the impact of speech therapy has been life-changing.
This journey reflects every aspect of this year’s Speech Pathology Week theme: connection, by allowing Phillip to more easily share moments with friends and family; confidence, as he proudly speaks up and joins conversations; inclusion, through being able to participate more fully in school and community life; empowerment, as he now advocates for his own needs; opportunity, by opening doors to learning and social experiences that were once difficult to access; wellbeing, reducing the frustration he once felt when misunderstood; and ultimately independence, giving him the tools to navigate daily life with greater ease and dignity.
Bronte is a warm and dedicated member of Therapy Care’s Allied Health team. With a Master’s in Speech Pathology from the University of Technology Sydney and a background in Speech and Hearing Sciences from Macquarie University, she brings both deep expertise and empathy to her work.
Her clinical skills span communication and language assessment, AAC support, oral motor and sensory-based strategies, and evidence-based therapy across the lifespan. She is particularly passionate about supporting children with autism and non-verbal communicators, helping them find their voice through AAC systems and tailored therapy approaches.
Bronte values Therapy Care’s hybrid service model, which allows her to deliver therapy in clinic, online, and community settings. This flexibility provides participants like Phillip with consistent, person-centred care, while the collaborative team culture at Therapy Care ensures the best outcomes through shared knowledge and support.
Phillip’s story reminds us of the profound role communication plays in every aspect of life. For him, progress has meant not just clearer speech but also greater independence, stronger connections, and more confidence to participate in his world.
At Therapy Care, we believe communication is a fundamental human right. Guided by our mission of building enduring relationships and our values of respect, growth, innovation, and community, our speech pathologists are committed to creating meaningful impact—one voice at a time.
