A Life Transformed: My Journey with Janette

By Bimla Madhri, Disability Support Worker at Therapy Care

Every day as a support worker brings something different; new challenges, yes, but also new wins, small moments of connection, and the kind of progress that reminds you why you do what you do. One of the most meaningful parts of my journey at Therapy Care has been working alongside Janette Tallon — a kind, gentle, and vibrant participant whose growth over the last few years continues to inspire me.

When I first met Janette four years ago, she was finding daily life a bit overwhelming. She had goals but they felt distant; things she dreamed about, but wasn’t quite sure how to reach. She lacked confidence in herself and in her ability to engage with the world around her. From the very beginning, I knew that my role wasn’t just to help Janette get through the day. It was to support her in building a life that felt full, connected, and hers.

Core Support that Makes a Difference

Through Therapy Care’s Daily Living Core Support services, I’ve been lucky to support Janette regularly; not just with everyday tasks, but with structure, confidence, and consistency.

We built a routine together that suited her goals and energy. At first, it was simple things: preparing meals together, keeping her home space tidy, and going for short walks around the neighbourhood. But those small, steady moments built trust, and led to bigger progress.

She began reconnecting with friends, attending community workshops, and even started a garden with her grandkids, which she now tends with so much pride. Janette’s ability to participate and self-direct her life has grown so much, and watching that happen has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

This is what good core support is about. It’s not just ticking off tasks. It’s about being there every day, to empower someone to live with purpose.

Matching Matters

I truly believe that one of the biggest factors in Janette’s success has been the relationship we’ve built. When participants are matched with the right support worker; someone they trust, connect with, and feel seen by — everything else becomes easier.

We laugh. We plan. We talk about her goals. And she knows I’ll show up and support her not just physically, but emotionally too.

Janette’s experience is a powerful example of why it’s not just the service that matters, it’s how it’s delivered. At Therapy Care, we take time to match support workers with participants thoughtfully. I feel so lucky to be a part of Janette’s life, and she’s become a very special part of mine.

A Whole Team Behind Her

In addition to her daily living support with Bimla, Janette also receives Occupational Therapy with Stephanie and Exercise Physiology with Jai as part of her broader Therapy Care team. This multidisciplinary approach ensures that every aspect of Janette’s wellbeing is supported — from physical health and safety to emotional confidence and community connection.

Stephanie, her Occupational Therapist, recently shared how much she enjoyed working with Janette. “She was always so sweet and bright,” Stephanie said. “And that’s undeniably credited to her support workers and family, who are so dedicated to taking such good care of her.”

This kind of cross-team collaboration — where support workers and allied health professionals are aligned on shared goals — plays a huge role in delivering consistent, empowering care that truly meets the needs of each participant.

Janette’s Goals, Janette’s Way

Janette’s current NDIS goals are centred around improving her independence, confidence, and connection to her community. These goals include:

  • Implementing her personalised exercise plan to improve mobility at home and in the community
  • Maintaining and increasing participation in social and community-based activities
  • Accessing assessments for equipment and home modifications to support her safety and independence
  • Receiving support with personal care and everyday tasks like shopping, cooking, and cleaning
  • Learning strategies to strengthen her communication skills

At Therapy Care, every support provided to Janette — whether it’s allied health therapy, daily living assistance, or encouragement during a social outing — is grounded in these goals. Her team works collaboratively to ensure her support plan remains flexible, personalised, and focused on what matters most to her.

Why I Do What I Do

Seeing Janette thrive, live more independently, and talk about her future with confidence fills me with pride. Her story reminds me that being a support worker isn’t just a job. It’s a calling. It’s about being a steady presence in someone’s life as they build their confidence and independence, one day at a time.

It’s also a reminder that core support — when delivered by people who genuinely care — isn’t just helpful. It’s life-changing.
